Avalanche Skills Tour  1 Day

This day completes the AIARE Level 1 cirriculum. It is designed for students who have completed their first 2 days of the course, have taken a previous AIARE 2-day or 2.5-day course or who would like to participate in a field refresher and pickup the most current information as it is constantly evolving.

An AIARE Avalanche Level 1 Certificate will be awarded on completion, or a previously issued 2-day certificate will be upgraded to a 3-day.

The Avalanche Skills Tour begins with a short indoor lesson, then a longer travel day in the field. Classroom session will include:
  • Interpret the Avalanche Forecast
  • Map reading lesson
  • Group member assessment
  • Create a tour plan
  • Review observations checklist
  • Personal/Group gear check
  • Safety plan review
Field Session will include:
  • Terrain travel, group management
  • Observations and information gathering
  • Terrain identification and utilization
  • Hazard recognition
  • Travel techniques
  • Spontaneous tests
  • Bonding tests
  • Enroute decision making
  • Complete rescue practice including multi-burial
