Backcountry Skiing, Lake Mary Chalet    2 Day
Randonnée or Telemark

After a bit of orientation, gear check and tour plan with the group we'll make the very short ski into our chalet at Lake Mary (6,980' - about 20 min.) and drop off our overnight gear. From there, with light day packs, we'll tour along Lake Mary to the Mt. Judah base at Sugar Bowl (about 30 min.). We'll then spend the rest of the day using the lifts to access the best out-of-bounds skiing the area has to offer. The evening will bring us back to our chalet for a fun-filled cooperative atmosphere including dinner, stories and slides around the fireplace.

The next morning after breakfast we'll climb Mt. Judah and Donner Peak (8,019') and ski all the way to Donner Lake (5,899') if snow conditions permit.

Skills we will practice along the way:
  • Terrain travel with climbing skins
  • Avalanche hazard recognition
  • Use of transceiver, probe and shovel
  • Uphill turns and kick turns
  • Downhill terrain utilization to avaiod hazard
  • Approprite travel techniques
