In-N-Out of Bounds at Sugar Bowl    1 Day
Randonnée or Telemark

This is a great day of adventure skiing at Sugar Bowl. After a warm-up run or two, we use the lift to gain some of Sugar Bowl's best off-piste (off the groomed) runs. After a few of the best ones, we usually leave the boundary again from the summit of Mt. Lincoln to ski the great east face or to the summit of Judah using our climbing skins along the way. When conditions permit, we often end with the "Lake Run" all the way to Donner Lake, then catching the shuttle bus back to Sugar Bowl.

Besides a great day of skiing for advanced skiers, this can be a great introduction to backcountry skiing techniques, including the use of touring bindings, climbing skins, a ski pack and avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel.

Skills will include:
  • Use of transceiver, probe and shovel
  • Use of a ski pack
  • Route and terrain selection
  • Travel techniques
  • Avalanche hazard recognition
  • Off groomed ski coaching
  • Use of climbing skins
  • Uphill touring technique
  • Uphill kick turns
