Basin Mountain (13,240') 1 Day
Beginning directly above the floor of the Owens Valley, this big day will begin with a very early start by headlamp to ensure the best snow conditions for the long descent.
Starting Point:
Near Horton lakes Trailhead (8,000'), off Hwy 168 from Hwy 395 near Bishop. We will meet in Bishop the night before, shuttle to the trailhead and a car camp bivouac to allow a very early start for this long climb.
The Tour:
From the trailhead, we will ascend directly to the base of the couloir along the snow-covered morrain. We'll climb the couloir itself (2,500') to the col (13,000') near the summit. From the col, we may choose to leave skis then scramble the final bit to the true summit (13,240') if time permits. From the col, we'll retrace our ascent steps with the incredible ski of this massif peak.
